On the day Grant Ferris is inaugurated as the new President of the United States, a retired Fredericksburg, Virginia chief of detectives named Withers Larue, learns of evidence that implicates the new First Lady, Dinah Ferris in three murders that occurred about a decade before when she lived in Fredericksburg with her first husband. The killings, dubbed "The Loverboy Murders" by the press were of three young men, alleged sexual predators who were lured to remote, romantic locations and shot. The novel follows the investigation, and ends with its aftermath.
